Rebeca Chavez
Rebeca Angelica Chavez was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. She was introduced to dance at the age of seven, where she began taking ballet classes at the Elite Academy of Dance under the direction of Miss Pati Lara. Her love and desire to dance ignited from there, turning her hobby into a passion. Throughout her elementary and junior high school years, Rebeca broaden her education of dance from ballet to include jazz and tap. When attending Montwood High School, studying under Mrs. Leslie Lopez, she was introduced to other forms of dance such as modern, contemporary, theatrical jazz, and hip-hop; while studying these other forms she was introduced to the Laban and Horton techniques. Throughout her high school dance career, she represented the Montwood High School Emerald Dancers Drill Team in many NDA competitions, where she was awarded second place at America’s Cup and Superior Dance Competition. After graduating, Rebeca went to pursue her dream of majoring in Dance Performance at the University of Texas at El Paso; when she first started her collegiate career, she was a part of the UTEP Golddiggers Dance Team under the direction of Becky Cano Salcido for the years 2013-2015. She is currently a senior in the Theater and Dance Department, and has worked under the direction of Lisa Smith, Myron H. Nadel, Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre, Anne Bishop, Christy Mitchell, and Leanne Rinelli. She formed part of the first UTEP Contemporary Dance Ensemble through 2017-2018. While pursuing her academic endeavors, she was fortunate to travel across the country for performance and training opportunities, she was able to work with Seattle’s Olivier Wevers, Joni McDonald from SALT/SALT 2, movement artist Eddie Martinez of Tanztheater Wuppertal, and Chicago-based choreographer and dance film director, Amanda Ramirez.
