Gay Related Immune Deficiency
GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency) was the given name to the disease we now know as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). During the early 1980s, the first identified cases of AIDS were seemingly correlated to gay men. This along with the long held stigma against homosexuality led to the public referring to the disease as GRID, gay cancer, or even the gay plague. AIDS is a disease caused by the HIV virus. It does not discriminate against gender or sexual orientation.
There has been a raise of reported HIV/AIDS cases in El Paso County from 2010-2014. As of 2014, over 80,000 persons were known to be living with HIV in Texas. We hope that by presenting this show we can bring awareness to our community and provide resources as to where they may go for information and help.
We have come a long way from the AIDS scare of the 1980s, however we cannot stop the conversation. From initially being referred to as GRID, to now, the progress in the research and medication of HIV/AIDS is exponential. Be it through our dancing or program notes we want to inform the audience of the disease as well as the advancements of medicines such as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and PEP (post exposure prophylaxis). "The GRID" is a program that we hope sparks an interest and starts a conversation. El Paso has shown to be a forward thinking city accepting of all its citizens. Our goal is to show those suffering with the disease that we care and that there is advancement in the field of medicine, while also providing a safe and entertaining space for people to get better informed to help end the stigma of HIV/AIDS.
